How to change your WiFi name in two minutes

  1. Use your router’s app if it has one. Mesh systems and most new routers (eero, Google Nest WiFi, TP-Link Deco, Netgear Orbi and the apps from big internet providers) have a WiFi or network settings screen with the name right there.
  2. No app? Use the browser. On a device connected to your network, type the router’s address into the address bar. It is printed on the sticker on the router, and is usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Log in with the admin password from the same sticker.
  3. Find the wireless settings. Look for Wireless, WiFi or WLAN. The name is called the SSID or Network Name. Some routers have separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; give them the same name or a matching pair.
  4. Type the new name and save. Keep it to 32 characters. The router restarts its WiFi, and every device has to reconnect with the same password as before.

Tip: leave your name, address and router model out of it. A funny name is a joke; a revealing one is a gift to strangers.

Funny WiFi names FAQ

What is a good funny WiFi name?

Short puns win because people read them in a list of networks for a second. Pretty Fly for a WiFi, The LAN Before Time and Bill Wi the Science Fi are the classics; for the holidays try Gobble Gobble Gigabytes or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Router.

How long can a WiFi name be?

A WiFi network name (the SSID) can be up to 32 bytes, which is 32 plain letters, numbers or spaces. Every name on this list fits. Emoji take up several bytes each, so they eat into the limit fast.

Can I use emoji in my WiFi name?

Most modern routers accept them and most phones show them, but some older laptops, smart TVs and printers display a row of odd symbols or refuse to connect. If a device won’t join, switch back to plain text.

Does changing the WiFi name change the password?

No. The name and the password are separate settings. Your devices will see the new name as a new network, though, so each one has to reconnect with the same password.

Is it safe to use a funny WiFi name?

Yes, as long as the name doesn’t give away personal details like your surname, house number or router model. Keep it friendly too: everyone within range can read it, including the neighbors you are joking about.
