1. Fifty Bucks Is Fifty Bucks

Best for: everyone. Clean, and perfect for anyone married to a world-class penny-pincher.

Buddy and his wife Edna went to the state fair every year, and every year Buddy would say, “Edna, I’d like to ride in that helicopter.”

Edna always replied, “I know, Buddy, but that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks.”

One year Buddy said, “Edna, I’m 85 years old. If I don’t ride that helicopter now, I might never get another chance.”

Edna replied, “Buddy, that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks.”

The pilot overheard them and said, “Folks, I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take you both up. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a single word, it’s free. But if you say one word, it’s fifty dollars.”

Buddy and Edna agreed, and up they went. The pilot threw every fancy maneuver he knew at them, loops, dives, daredevil tricks, over and over. Not a word.

When they landed, the pilot turned to Buddy and said, “By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn’t. I’m impressed!”

Buddy said, “Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Edna fell out. But you know, fifty bucks is fifty bucks.”

The twist: Some people will lose a spouse before they lose fifty dollars.

2. The Dumbest Kid at the Barbershop

Best for: everyone, including kids. A clean classic about who is really the smart one.

A young boy walks into a barbershop, and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.”

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves.

“What did I tell you?” says the barber. “That kid never learns!”

Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?”

The boy licks his cone and says, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over.”

Funny Short Story Graphic: A Barber Thinks A Boy Is Dumb For Picking Two Quarters Over A Dollar, But The Boy Is Playing The Long Game

The twist: The person everyone laughs at is often the one running the game.

3. Bubba’s Friday Night Catfish

Best for: anyone who grew up with Friday fish fries. Clean, with a gentle poke at religion.

Every Friday night after work, Bubba fired up his outdoor grill and cooked venison steaks. But all of Bubba’s neighbors were Catholic, and since it was Lent, they couldn’t eat red meat on Fridays.

The smell of grilled venison was causing such a problem for the faithful that they finally talked to their priest. The priest visited Bubba and suggested he become a Catholic.

After several classes and a lot of study, Bubba attended Mass. The priest sprinkled holy water over him and said, “You were born a Baptist and raised a Baptist, but now you are a Catholic.”

The neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived and the smell of grilled venison filled the neighborhood again. They called the priest immediately.

The priest rushed into Bubba’s yard, clutching his rosary and ready to scold him, then stopped and stared. There stood Bubba with a small bottle of holy water, carefully sprinkling it over the sizzling meat and chanting: “You wuz born a deer, you wuz raised a deer, but now you are a catfish.”

The twist: Bubba didn’t break the rules. He just learned them better than anyone else.

4. “Please Wake Me at 5:00 AM”

Best for: married couples and anyone who has ever won an argument by saying nothing. Clean.

A man and his wife were going through a rough patch and giving each other the silent treatment.

Then the man realized he needed his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and lose), he wrote on a piece of paper, “Please wake me at 5:00 AM,” and left it where he knew she would find it.

The next morning he woke up, looked at the clock and saw it was 9:00 AM. He had missed his flight.

Furious, he was about to go find out why she hadn’t woken him when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. It said, “It is 5:00 AM. Wake up.”

The twist: Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests.

5. Whose Phone Is This?

Best for: office break rooms and group chats. Clean.

Several men were in a gym locker room when a cell phone on a bench rang. One man picked it up, put it on speaker and started talking. Everyone else stopped to listen.

“Hello!”

“Hi, honey, it’s me. Are you at the club?”

“Yes.”

“I’m at the shops and found this beautiful leather coat. It’s only $2,000. Is it OK if I buy it?”

“Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.”

“I also stopped by the Lexus dealership and saw the new models. I saw one I really liked.”

“How much?”

“$90,000.”

“OK, but for that price I want it with all the options.”

“Great! Oh, and one more thing. Janie says the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They’re asking $980,000.”

“Then go ahead and offer $900,000. They’ll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra eighty thousand if it’s what you really want.”

“OK. I’ll see you later! I love you so much!”

“Bye! I love you, too.”

The man hung up. The other men in the locker room were staring at him, mouths wide open. He looked around and asked, “Anyone know whose phone this is?”

The twist: Generosity is easy with someone else’s money.

6. The Goodbye Letter and the Feet Under the Bed

Best for: adults and long-married couples. Mild language.

A woman felt her husband had become distant and unloving, and she wanted to know how he would react if she left without telling him where she had gone.

So she wrote him a letter saying she was tired of him and didn’t want to live with him anymore. It was petty, maybe childish, but she needed to know how he felt. Besides, it was more of a prank than a real test, right?

She left the letter on the bedroom table and hid under the bed to wait for his reaction.

When her husband came home, he read the letter. After a few moments of silence, he picked up the pen and added something to it. Then he started getting changed, whistling, singing and dancing as he went. He seemed overjoyed.

The woman was shocked and hurt. Then it got worse. Her husband picked up his phone and dialed. “Hey, babe. I’m just getting changed, I’ll join you in a bit. As for the other fool, it finally dawned on her that I was cheating and she left. I was wrong to have married her. I wish you and I had met earlier. See you soon, honey!”

He hung up and walked out, and she heard the front door close behind him. In tears, she crawled out from under the bed and stumbled over to read what her unfaithful husband had written at the end of her letter:

“I could see your feet under the bed, you idiot. I’m going out to buy bread.”

The twist: If you test your spouse, make sure your feet are fully under the bed.

7. The Speeding Groom

Best for: everyone. Clean and very short, perfect for a wedding toast.

A police officer in a small town pulled over a motorist who was speeding down Main Street.

“But, officer,” the man began, “I can explain…”

“Just be quiet,” snapped the officer. “I’m going to let you cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back.”

“But, officer, I just wanted to say…”

“And I said keep quiet! You’re going to jail!”

A few hours later, the officer looked in on his prisoner and said, “Lucky for you the chief is at his daughter’s wedding. He’ll be in a good mood when he gets back.”

“Don’t count on it,” said the man in the cell. “I’m the groom.”

The twist: Always let the speeder finish his sentence.

8. “I’d Like to Be Eight Again”

Best for: birthday cards and husbands who take things literally. Clean.

A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife look at herself in the mirror. Her birthday was coming up, so he asked what she would like.

“I’d like to be eight again,” she said, still looking in the mirror.

On the morning of her birthday, he got up early, made her a big bowl of Coco Pops and took her to the theme park. He put her on every ride: the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Roller Coaster, everything.

Five hours later they staggered out, her head reeling and her stomach upside down. He took her to McDonald’s and ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake. Then it was off to a movie with popcorn, soda and her favorite candy.

Finally she wobbled home and collapsed into bed. He leaned over with a big smile and asked, “Well, dear, what was it like being eight again?”

Her eyes slowly opened. “I meant my dress size, you idiot!”

The twist: Even when a man is listening, he can still get it wrong.

9. What Did You Do All Day?

Best for: every parent who has ever been asked this question. Clean.

A man came home from work to find his three children outside in their pajamas, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers all over the front yard. His wife’s car door was open, so was the front door, and there was no sign of the dog.

Inside, it was worse. A lamp had been knocked over and the rug was wadded against a wall. The TV was blaring cartoons, and the family room was strewn with toys and clothes. In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast was spilled on the counter, the fridge door was wide open, dog food covered the floor and a broken glass lay under the table.

He ran upstairs, stepping over toys and piles of clothes, worried his wife might be sick or hurt. Water was trickling out of the bathroom, where wet towels, toys and miles of toilet paper covered the floor and toothpaste was smeared across the mirror.

He rushed into the bedroom and found his wife curled up in bed in her pajamas, reading a novel. She looked up, smiled and asked how his day went.

“What happened here today?” he asked.

She smiled again. “You know how every day when you come home from work, you ask me what in the world I do all day?”

“Yes,” he said.

“Well, today I didn’t do it.”

The twist: You only notice the work when it stops getting done.

10. The Letter on the Pillow

Best for: parents of teenagers. Adults only: drug and sex references.

A father walking past his son’s bedroom was astonished to see the bed neatly made and everything picked up. Then he saw an envelope propped on the pillow, addressed “Dad.” With the worst premonition, he opened it with trembling hands.

“Dear Dad, it is with great regret and sorrow that I’m writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with you and Mom. I’ve found real passion with Stacy. She is so nice, but I knew you wouldn’t approve of her because of her piercings, her tattoos, her tight motorcycle clothes and because she is so much older than I am. But it’s not only the passion, Dad. She’s pregnant.

Stacy says we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter, and we share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn’t really hurt anyone. We’ll be growing it ourselves and trading it with the other people in the commune. Don’t worry, Dad. I’m 15, and I know how to take care of myself. Someday we’ll be back to visit, so you can get to know your many grandchildren. Love, your son, Joshua.

P.S. Dad, none of the above is true. I’m over at Jason’s house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the report card that’s on the kitchen table. Call when it’s safe for me to come home!”

Funny Short Story Graphic: A Teenage Son Leaves A Shocking Fake Letter On His Pillow To Soften The Blow Of A Bad Report Card

The twist: Joshua understands expectation management better than most CEOs.

11. Susie and the Goldfish Bowl

Best for: everyone. Sweet, clean and secretly the most heartwarming story on this list.

A nine-year-old boy is sitting at his desk when suddenly there’s a puddle between his feet and the front of his pants is wet. He can’t imagine how it happened. It’s never happened before, and he knows that when the boys find out, he’ll never hear the end of it. When the girls find out, they’ll never speak to him again.

He puts his head down and prays, “Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now! Five minutes from now I’m dead meat.” He looks up, and here comes the teacher with a look that says he’s been discovered.

Just then a classmate named Susie, carrying a goldfish bowl full of water, trips in front of the teacher and dumps the whole bowl in the boy’s lap.

The boy pretends to be angry while thinking, “Thank you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!” Instead of being laughed at, he gets sympathy. The teacher rushes him downstairs for a pair of gym shorts while the other kids clean up around his desk, and the ridicule that should have been his lands on Susie instead. “You’ve done enough, you klutz!”

At the end of the day, waiting for the bus, the boy walks over to Susie and whispers, “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”

Susie whispers back, “I wet my pants once too.”

The twist: The kindest people are often the ones willing to look clumsy.

12. The Parking Spot Payback

Best for: anyone who has ever had a parking space stolen. Adults: drinking and mild language.

I took the family out to eat at Applebee’s. The lot was full, so when I saw a customer come out to leave, I waited about ten minutes for him to pull out. He finally did, and a car full of young women zipped into my spot. I rolled down my window and told them I’d been waiting for that space. The driver said, “Too bad, your name wasn’t on it.”

I was livid, but I found another space and we went in and ate. The women were at the bar doing shots. After we paid, I asked our waiter if he wanted to make $20. I asked him to go up to the women ten minutes after we left and tell them someone had called to say their car had been keyed and that they should have parked somewhere else. (I did not key the car.)

I called him an hour later to ask how it went. He said they all went nuts, screaming and swearing, and even called the police.

Bonus: the cops found no damage to the car, but they noticed the women were far too drunk to drive. The officers left, circled back and watched the car. The women came out, got in and started the engine, and the parking lot lit up in blue. DUIs all around.

I didn’t hear about the bonus until a week later, when I went back for a few beers and the waiter told me the whole story, laughing the entire time. Another $20 to the waiter. Best $40 I ever spent, and I kept a drunk driver off the streets.

The twist: Karma sometimes needs a little nudge, and a $20 tip.

13. Leroy and the Gator

Best for: backyard barbecues. Mild rough-and-tumble humor.

A filthy rich North Carolina man threw a party around the pool at his mansion and invited all his buddies and neighbors, including Leroy, the only redneck in the neighborhood.

Leroy was having a great time drinking, dancing, eating shrimp and barbecue and flirting with all the women. At the height of the party, the host announced, “I have a ten-foot man-eating gator in my pool, and I’ll give a million dollars to anyone who has the nerve to jump in.”

The words were barely out of his mouth when there was a loud splash. Leroy was in the pool, fighting the gator with everything he had: jabbing it in the eyes, throwing punches, head-butts and choke holds, biting its tail and flipping it through the air like a judo instructor. The water churned, both of them screamed, and finally Leroy strangled the gator and let it float to the top like a dime-store goldfish. Then he slowly climbed out.

Everyone stared in disbelief. Finally the host said, “Well, Leroy, I reckon I owe you a million dollars.”

“No, that’s okay. I don’t want it,” said Leroy.

“Man, I have to give you something. How about half a million?”

“No thanks.”

“Come on, I insist. How about a new Porsche, a Rolex and some stock options?” Again Leroy said no.

Confused, the rich man asked, “Well, Leroy, then what do you want?”

Leroy said, “I want the name of the idiot who pushed me in the pool!”

The twist: Not every hero volunteered.

14. The Husband Who Wanted His Wife’s Easy Life

Best for: married couples with a sense of humor. Adults only.

A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home, so he prayed: “Dear Lord, I go to work every day and put in eight hours while my wife merely stays at home. I want her to know what I go through, so please let her body switch with mine for a day.”

The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, granted his wish. The next morning, the man woke up as a woman. He cooked breakfast, woke the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them, packed their lunches, drove them to school, picked up the dry cleaning, stopped at the bank, went grocery shopping, put the groceries away, paid the bills and balanced the checkbook.

He cleaned the litter box and bathed the dog. By 1 p.m. he was hurrying to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust and mop the kitchen floor. He picked up the kids, argued with them on the way home, set out milk and cookies, organized homework and did the ironing. At 4:30 he started peeling potatoes, washing vegetables and breading pork chops. After supper he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the kids and put them to bed. At 9 p.m., exhausted and with his chores still not finished, he went to bed, where he was expected to make love, which he managed to get through without complaint.

The next morning he knelt by the bed and said, “Lord, I don’t know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife being able to stay home all day. Please, oh please, let us trade back.”

The Lord replied, “My son, I feel you have learned your lesson, and I’ll be happy to change things back. You’ll just have to wait nine months, though. You got pregnant last night.”

The twist: Be careful what you pray for, and read the fine print.

15. The Blind Cowboy and the Blonde Joke

Best for: bar nights and joke swaps. Mostly clean.

An old blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar stool, orders a shot of Jack Daniel’s and, after a while, yells to the bartender, “Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?”

The bar falls absolutely silent.

In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, cowboy, I think it’s only fair, given that you’re blind, that you know five things. One, the bartender is a blonde with a baseball bat. Two, the bouncer is a blonde with a billy club. Three, I’m a six-foot, 175-pound blonde with a black belt in karate. Four, the woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weightlifter. Five, the lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler. Now think about it seriously, cowboy. Do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?”

The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, “No… not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.”

The twist: He backed down, and still got the last word.
