Short version: the original LifeStraw Personal we featured is still sold, and LifeStraw now also makes the Peak Series straw. Both filter up to 4,000 liters and remove bacteria, parasites and microplastics. The Peak is a bit heavier but flows faster. Get the Peak for hikers who drink a lot on the trail. Get the classic Personal for the lightest emergency kit or a stocking stuffer.

A LifeStraw lets you drink straight from a stream, lake or questionable campground tap. It’s the cheapest piece of peace of mind you can put in a backpack, a glovebox or an emergency kit. Here’s how the two straws compare, based on LifeStraw’s own comparison chart (we didn’t test them hands-on).

What matters in real use

  • It filters, it doesn’t purify everything. Straw filters handle bacteria and parasites. Check LifeStraw’s guidance before drinking water that may carry viruses or chemicals.
  • Faster flow is less work. The Peak’s higher flow means less sucking and more drinking on a hot hike.
  • Weight barely matters for most people. 19 grams only counts if you’re counting grams.
  • Toss one in every kit. Car, go-bag, tackle box: they’re light enough to forget about until you need one.

Who should buy which

  • Get the LifeStraw Peak Series for regular hikers and campers.
  • Get the classic LifeStraw Personal for emergency kits, stocking stuffers and kids’ camping bags.
  • Fishing trip? Pack one with the gear in our fishing gifts for dads.

Gift it to: the hiker, the prepper, the scout leader, or the friend whose idea of camping is a cabin with Wi-Fi (they need it most).
