Eat in Style with Food Subscription Box From Mantry

Subscription boxes for socks, video games, geekware, and now…food? Yes, food. Mantry has caught my eye as a subscription box full of artisan food. It came up as a “Valentine’s gift” suggestion and though we’re past Valentine’s Day for another year, I wanted it upon sight. I decided to take a look and explore what I could look forward to with the Mantry box.

Inside Mantry, the “Mans” Subscription Box

First up, the cost. Subscription boxes aren’t cheap and Mantry runs $49.99 every 2 months, or you could get a 12 month plan for $294. That may seem steep but I also know I can hit up the Whole Foods and spend over $100 in a single day for a bunch of healthy food.

What do you get for your money whether you buy it for yourself or give it as a gift? Plenty.

The boxes promise “6 full-size artisan food products shipped straight to your door.” Food in the boxes comes from America, and is collected from all over the country, curated around a theme. Each box is actually a wooden crate emblazoned with the Mantry logo, which is a pretty cool touch and also made in America.

What really sets the whole thing apart is the “Mantry Manual,” a high-color booklet of recipes, information and photos related to the current box. I also appreciate that the size is a full-size, and not a snack size like other food-related subscription boxes.

You don’t know what you’re getting until it arrives, as is the same with most subscription boxes so this is all sort of a mystery. Luckily though, the website for Mantry lists the contents of previous months’ boxes. Here’s the breakdown for a Tailgate-themed box:

  • Aurelia’s Chorizo
  • La Esquina Black Bean Dip
  • Owl’s Brew ‘The Classic’
  • Pork Clouds Rosemary & Sea Salt
  • Mike’s Hot Honey
  • Molly & Me Sweet Heat Pecans

I don’t know about you, but all of that makes me hungry — which is a good sign. It’s also cool that you can discover some smaller or independent brands and if you like them, reach out and buy their food direct after the box is gone. Speaking of recipes, not only does the booklet in each box feature recipes, but you can also get a peek at their creations on the website too.

Finally, another reason that will move me to subscribe (or forward it to someone as a gift idea) is that Mantry gives back. They donate 1% of all profits to City Harvest, a non-profit organization founded back in 1982 in New York City. City Harvest helps the city’s most vulnerable, those living below the poverty line by rescuing good food that would be otherwise thrown out by restaurants, companies and other entities. So when you eat from your Mantry, your dollars will go towards helping someone else eat good healthy food.
