Short version: there’s no newer Ember mug yet. The Ember Mug 2 is still Ember’s current smart mug, so we refreshed this review. It keeps coffee at your chosen temperature for about 1.5 hours off the coaster (10 oz) and all day on it. Buy it if cold coffee ruins your morning. For commutes, Ember’s travel mug and tumbler last longer off the charger.

Would you pay smart-phone-accessory money for a coffee mug? People who’ve owned one say yes, mostly because they finally finish a hot cup. Here’s what you get, based on Ember’s support pages and published coverage (we didn’t test it hands-on).

What matters in real use
- Keep it on the coaster. Battery covers a meeting or a school run. The coaster covers the rest of the day.
- Pick the size you drink. The 14 oz holds more but runs a little shorter off the coaster.
- Hand-wash it. It has electronics inside, so treat it gently (check Ember’s care guide).
- On the go? The Ember travel mug and tumbler hold heat for about 3 hours off the charger.
Who should buy it
- Buy the Ember Mug 2 for the slow sipper, the parent who reheats the same cup four times, or the desk worker with a 9 a.m. meeting.
- Skip it if you chug your coffee in five minutes. You’d be buying a very fancy regular mug.
- Pair it with: a good desk setup. See our gifts for gadget lovers.
Gift it to: new parents, teachers, remote workers, or anyone who has ever microwaved the same coffee twice.
